Tanjung Setia 20 minutes south of Krui is definitely the best place for a surf adventure in South Sumatra. The world class surf break Ujung Bocur ‘Karang Nyimbur’ only a 200 mtr walk from beach front surf accommodation is but one of many quality waves in the area. This section of the South Sumatra coastline remains unspoilt by over development and with waves like Way Jambu ‘Sumatran Pipeline’ a scenic 10 minute scooter ride away Tanjung Setia is truly a surfers paradise.
Exploring the waves of South Sumatra at Tanjung Setia Beach
Surfers and body boarders will find a selection of over 15 quality waves ranging from mellow 3′ for the beginner to 8′ plus freight train barrels for the more experienced. The swell is very consistent and all the breaks are an easy paddle out from the beach. Hire a scooter approx RP 65,000 per day (price 2013) or driver for the day and you have the necessary ingredients for exploring all the breaks that are just a short drive from the main highway that winds its way North and South along the South Sumatra coast. If you don’t feel in the mood to explore you can just grab your board and head out for a session on the 400mtr long Ujung Bocur. The many tracks and roads that lead to the coast are an adventures dream come true and there is no need to be afraid if you get lost as the local kids will be able to point you in the right direction with a big smile and “Hello Mister!”
Travel Tips to Tanjung Setia Beach
The Krui and Tanjung Setia area is mainly a farming and fishing community so you will not find a Bali style shopping experience here, no air-conditioned malls, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Burger King or Star-bucks but what you will find are some of the friendliest and open people on the planet. Its a good idea to bring all your surfing gear with you including booties, extra fins, sunblock and a basic medical kit to treat minor cuts from a brush with the reef. Tanjung Setia beach has a Surf Shop and Surfboard Repairs only a short walk from Ujung Bocur but they may not always have what you need.
Even on the major breaks you can enjoy un-crowded surf with 10 – 30 in the water during the high season (May – August) and 5 – 25 in the off season (late September – April). Though there is surf on the South Sumatra coast all year round the weather from November to April can be severe as the ‘Windy Season’ kicks in. In the water it is usually laid back and you will be surprised to find other surfers calling you onto waves, as it used to be many years ago if you show respect for those who around then you will be rewarded with the easy going surf experience that is South Sumatra.
